Fishing in Brittany

Brittany truly is THE top fishing region. Colorful flottillas of trawlers, endless shores washed over by powerful tides, running streams along shady banks, peaceful ponds in between rivers and the sea : everything seems to have been created in the sole purpose to attract the angler. Breton waters  are characterised by a great diversity of fish species, and the presence of a variety of noble fish. The coast, unfurling over 2370 km, offers countless spots for fishing.
Changing from hidden creeks to jagged cliffs or long, white sandy beaches, the breton coastline suits any kind of fishing pleasure. Anywhere you choose to cast your line, places never look the same with the tides coming in and out several times a day. Even the colours of the sky above are  continously changing.

Put you might prefer climbing through the rocks with your children, searching for all these tiny marine creatures, hidden in each and every little whole.
In the inland, you can enjoy the calm, preserved nature while teasing the roach.  The network of  imposing or quiet rivers and streams, gives shelter to 35 species of fish. So, go and meet the wild salmon and the fabulous carp!
Adventure is waiting there for everyone, along the rivers or the seaside. Guided fishing-journeys on the open sea, lessons or internships are provided mostly everywhere.

Brittany has some of the best fishing rivers and lakes in France, as well as something like a third of France's coastline, giving a great variety for keen anglers.

Angling and fishing in Brittany

Fishing in the sea

Fishing is not only a sport. First of all it is the career of many passionate men, who have built their lives on a true culture of the sea. Their precious advice and precise knowledge of the sea and fish will help you to fishing experiences of all kinds: deep-sea fishing, fishing close to the shore, or on the beach. Fish auctions are a sight to behold to get a gripping impression of the real life and work aboard the fishing boats, and also the different techniques of fishing and  fish selling (guided visits are possible on bookings).
1 sport, 100 techniques.
On the shore, you would choose casting or surfcasting techniques, angling with natural bait to attract bass and sea bream, turbot or sole, with lines casted into the waves. On the open sea, and in good company of a specialist, you can enjoy a sport outing on big-game fishing, or choose quiet dragnet fishing, trying to lure bass and gurnard.

Fishing in the river

Sweet water angling needs equal skill. To bail a trout, you might need to discreetly follow its way upstream. Put worms or dead minnow on the hook to catch it in the beginning of the season, or  flies in summer. It always takes a lot of patience to catch a carp, and  you might need to get up for night-time fishing. Pikes won't be lured unless the bail's movements are very realistic. And if you still need one more reason to be tempted by breton rivers, it would surely be this one: the almost exclusive presence of the king of all river-fish, the Salmo Salar. A mythical salmon, that has deserted most of France's great rivers, but is still appearing in Brittany thanks to well-designed lay-outs that do not hinder migration. Many opportunities to put your skills to the test, and if ever you need a little hand, look for lessons or training courses, provided all over Brittany.

The one that got away !
